Grady Finch, a man convicted of murdering a convenience store owner, awaits his pending execution by lethal injection. Listening to the protestors and news crews outside his prison cell, Grady becomes increasingly terrified of his fate. Grady maintains his innocence throughout. The only person who believes Grady is his steadfast attorney, Liz Sumner who is determined to save Grady from execution. Unfortunately, the Governor rejects Liz’s petition to halt the execution. As Grady approaches the injection table, he is so overcome with fear that he passes out. While unconscious, Grady sees a beautiful, winged woman hovering above him who gently whispers, "Not yet. You’re mine." Grady wakes up to find that the injection device has mysteriously malfunctioned and his execution must be postponed. Three more times Grady’s life is spared by a coincidental occurrence, and each time he sees the same winged woman. Grady feels invincible and his fame continues to soar. Grady is soon granted a new trial and he is found not guilty. On his way out of the courthouse as a free man, an overconfident Grady privately confesses to his lawyer Liz that he was in fact guilty of murdering the convenience store owner. Just then, fate ultimately succeeds in punishing him when a large statue of Winged Justice topples over and crushes Grady to death.

The police escorts Trace Malone, a juvenile delinquent, home after he is caught stealing a car. Just after arriving home, Trace and his mother receive word that her husband, Rob Malone, has been declared missing in action in during his line of duty. Later, Trace is startled to discover his father standing behind the refrigerator door. Because Rob has been away during most of Trace’s childhood, Trace feels extremely bitter towards him. Rob’s sudden appearance makes Trace leery of his father’s intentions for returning home, yet he is afraid that Rob will leave suddenly again for a long period of time. Rob promises, however, to finish building a car with Trace that they had begun together years ago. Awakened by howling dogs that night, Trace notices his father standing outside and talking to three soldiers. Rob pleads for more time, saying that he is not ready to leave yet. As the soldiers walk away and disappear into the nearby trees, Trace believes he knows the real reason his father has come.
