Into the Light

Directed by: Lou Diamond Phillips

Starring: Samantha Mathis, Reed Diamond

Rachel McCallister is a teacher at a high school who feels like she’s ineffective at her job because she is unable to communicate with her students. One day on her way home, Rachel sees one of her students, Raul, weaving in and out of traffic on his skateboard. Rachel notices that Raul’s face is aglow, an eerie light emanating from him. Thinking nothing of it, Rachel continues on her trip home and boards the bus. Rachel sees the light again—this time in the face of the bus driver. Suddenly, the bus driver collapses, grabbing his chest and dies. As soon as Rachel arrives home, she calls Raul’s house and finds out that Raul is in a coma after being hit by a car earlier that evening. The next day at school, it’s revealed that Raul died from his injuries. Rachel is positive that the light is a harbinger of impending death. Rachel returns to school the next day on edge and unsure of what to do with her newfound power. Walking down the hallways at school, she notices the light on several students’ faces. Rachel is sure that something terrible is about to happen and tells the principal of her fears. Ignoring Rachel’s warnings, the principal suggests that she leave for the day to calm down. Once home, Rachel cannot ignore her own instincts and suspects that she knows who may be responsible for the imminent deaths. Deciding that she cannot just sit idly by, Rachel rushes back to school to stop the impending deaths.

When Marcus Fisher, a tagger for the street gang The Deuces, sees a rival graffiti artist painting over his gang’s insignia on a city wall, he shoots and kills him. Later that evening, disturbed by the murder he committed, Marcus revisits the scene of the crime. To his disbelief, Marcus discovers that his murder victim’s dead body has been drawn into the mural. The following morning, Marcus covers that part of the painting with black spray paint in order to erase the image that continues to haunt him. Rosas, a gang counselor who knows Marcus, brings him back to the mural only to rediscover that the figure he spray-painted over has returned. Not only that, but a figure painted in white, is pointing a gun at the dead body with the Deuces symbol on the arm. Rosas tries to get an explanation from Marcus, while Marcus continues unsuccessfully to obscure the mural.
