Tyler Ward is a telephone linesman who dreams of hitting it big by winning the lottery. One day while working on a phone line, he is struck by lightning and is nearly killed. While Tyler manages to survive his traumatic experience, he is left with the ability to read the minds of those around him. At first Tyler is terrified of his newfound powers, but then begins to read people’s minds in order to excel at card games and the stock market. Along with his best friend, Buddy, Tyler amasses a fortune from his winnings. But money is not enough for Tyler; he is determined to win the heart of his beautiful boss from the phone company, Shannon. When she does not reciprocate his feelings, Tyler is overcome by anger and jealousy, and his newfound gift suddenly seems more like a curse.
