Matthew McGreevey is driving home on a rainy night when he is approached at a stoplight by a frantic black man. Matthew does not open the car door and instead drives away allowing the man to be beaten up by unknown assailants. The following morning, Matthew wakes up in pain with his entire body bruised. On his way to work, he picks up the newspaper from the driveway to discover that the black man was Professor John Woodrell and that he had been beaten to death. Matthew has intense feelings of guilt about having not helped the desperate man. Throughout the day, Matthew’s skin continues to darken as his guilty conscience intensifies. When Matthew arrives home that night, he realises that he has actually turned into John Woodrell when his wife panics and throws a flower vase at him, thinking he is a strange intruder. Once he looks in the mirror, he darts to his car only to be shot at by a suspicious neighbor. Matthew decides to visit the Woodrell family in an attempt to explain why he did not help John and reverse what has happened to his appearance. He tells the family the only reason he drove away was because he was scared. Woodrell’s wife asks Matt whether he would have helped if Woodrell had been white.
